University of Moratuwa and University of Peradeniya Triumph at XIV SLUG Chess Championships 2023

 In a display of exceptional chess talent and strategic prowess, the University of Moratuwa secured the championship title in the Men's event, while the University of Peradeniya emerged victorious in the Women's event at the XIV SLUG Chess Championships 2023.


From September 2nd to 4th, 2023, Eastern University, Sri Lanka, played host to this prestigious chess competition. Organized by the Sri Lanka University Sports Association, the championships were conducted separately for men and women. The format consisted of five rounds of Swiss teams, with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move 01.


Men's Championship: University of Moratuwa Takes the Crown


Fifteen formidable teams vied for supremacy in the Men's Championship. The University of Moratuwa demonstrated remarkable consistency and skill, clinching the championship with a perfect score of 10/10 match points. They remained undefeated throughout the event, showcasing their dominance.


The competition was fierce, and two teams ended the tournament with 8/10 match points, resulting in a tie for the championship. However, the University of Peradeniya secured the coveted first runners-up position, edging out the University of Ruhuna due to a superior tie-break score. The University of Ruhuna graciously accepted the second runner-up position.


Women's Championship: University of Peradeniya's Triumph


In the Women's Championship, an equally intense battle unfolded as 15 teams vied for glory. The University of Peradeniya exhibited exceptional skill and determination, clinching the championship with an impressive 09/10 match points. They maintained an unbeaten record throughout the competition, with only one draw against the University of Moratuwa.


Remarkably, the University of Moratuwa also secured 09/10 match points. However, the University of Moratuwa claimed the championship title due to their superior tie-break score. The University of Peradeniya graciously accepted the first runners-up position, while the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka secured the second runners-up position with a commendable 07/10 match points.


The XIV SLUG Chess Championships 2023 witnessed fierce competition and celebrated the exceptional chess talents within Sri Lanka's university community. Congratulations to all the winners, whose dedication and strategic brilliance shone brightly in this thrilling competition.
