Held every two years, the 10th edition of the FIDE World Cup 2023 took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 30th July to 24th August 2023. With an impressive pool of 206 players in the open section and 103 in the Women's competition, this event featured a remarkable combined prize pool of USD 2.5 million.

The tournament followed an exhilarating 8-round knockout format, with the top 50 seeds receiving a direct bye to the second round. The competition boasted some of the chess world's finest players, including the likes of Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, Wesley So, and many more renowned grandmasters from around the globe.

Our young talent, IM Susal De Silva (ELO 2433), commenced his journey by being paired with strong Grand Master Eric Hansen (ELO 2609) from Canada in the first round. Advancing to the 2nd round, Susal faced the mighty Grand Master Radoslaw Wojtaszek (ELO 2676) from Poland, where the rating difference was substantial. Nevertheless, in a captivating showdown, Susal impressively secured a draw against Radoslaw in the first game of the second round.

The subsequent game witnessed an intense battle where Susal played black against the Poland Grand Master. Despite putting up a valiant effort, Susal narrowly missed victory in this thrilling encounter.

While Susal may have concluded his journey at the FIDE World Cup 2023 after the second round, the exposure gained from this high-level event will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for his future performances in upcoming competitions. His talent and dedication are bound to shine even brighter in the chess arena.

As Sri Lankans, we are immensely proud of you, Susal! Your remarkable journey at the FIDE World Cup 2023 has left an indelible mark, and we look forward to witnessing your continued success and accomplishments in the world of chess!
